Increasing Demand

Although the pandemic has impacted many professions, the demand for DEAs continues to grow, with the housing market remaining open.

A Growing Profession

The DEA profession has been around for almost two decades now and continues to grow in popularity. Over the last couple of years the demand for the services of qualified DEAs has increased due to the government’s renewed focus on improving the energy efficiency of existing homes and the introduction of new schemes and regulations.

DEAs have also been largely unaffected by the Covid-19 pandemic, as the housing market continues to remain open, with properties still being sold and let.

An ideal new career

No previous experience or qualifications are required for individuals to qualify as a DEA, which makes starting a new career in this area relatively easy. DEAs can also choose to work for an existing company or become self-employed, where they can manage their own workloads.

The Benefits

  •   Work for yourself and enjoy ultimate work/life flexibility
  •   Supplement your existing income, or build a completely new business
  •   Complete work at your leisure
  •   Seek employment opportunities with existing energy assessment organisations
  •   Develop a new business in a high demand industry
  •   Low set up costs

About the Role

The role of the DEA is predominantly site based and involves the collection of domestic property data (information about property age, walls, floors roofs etc).  This data is collected and entered into approved software which calculates the energy performance of that property and produces an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC).

The assessment itself can take 1-2 hours to complete, but can earn you anywhere from £45 – £120 (it’s up to you how much you want to charge).

EPCs are required for UK properties when they are marketed for sale or let, which means that the demand for a DEA will typically come from a property owner or agent.

Government Funded Training

The Green Homes Grant Skills training scheme is a time limited opportunity, which enables those who are currently unemployed to gain skills and expertise in domestic energy and retrofit assessment at a significantly reduced cost. Training and accreditation is provided by Elmhurst Energy.
